Shotokan Karate Kicking Drills: Master the Three Essential Kicks

Whether you are training in a dojo or practicing at home through our Online Shotokan Karate Academy, developing “kime” (focus) and proper form in your kicks is vital. This drill focuses on the three foundational kicks of Shotokan: Mae Geri, Mawashi Geri, and Yoko Geri Kekomi.

To get the most out of this session, use a heavy bag or have a partner hold a striking pad. Focus on the setup, the execution, and—most importantly—the chamber.

1. Mae Geri (Front Kick)

The secret to a devastating front kick isn’t just in the leg; it’s in the hips.

  • The Setup: Bring your knee up sharply toward your chest (aiming just below the belly button).
  • The Strike: Thrust forward with your hips, hitting the pad with the koshi (ball of the foot).
  • The Recovery: Do not let your leg drop! Snap the foot back to the chambered position before placing it back on the floor.

2. Mawashi Geri (Roundhouse Kick)

For this portion of the drill, have your partner hold the pad at a 45-degree angle or horizontally.

  • The Setup: As you lift your leg, begin rotating your standing foot.
  • The Strike: You can strike with the instep for reach or the ball of the foot for traditional power. Ensure your knee travels in a circular arc.
  • The Recovery: Retract the leg quickly to maintain balance and avoid being grabbed.

3. Yoko Geri Kekomi (Side Thrust Kick)

This is where we generate the most “oomph” through technical precision.

  • The Setup: Raise your knee across your body to “load” the kick.
  • The Strike: As you thrust the heel into the pad, pivot your standing heel toward the target. This pivot unlocks your hip and allows your full body weight to move into the strike.
  • The Recovery: Pull the knee back into the chest before returning to your fighting stance

Pro-Tip: Speed comes from relaxation. Don’t tense up before the impact. Stay fluid through the transition between each kick, and ensure your guard stays up throughout the entire drill.
