Online Shotokan Karate Drills: Perfecting the Heian Sandan Double Block

Online Shotokan Karate Drills

Are you reaching the intermediate ranks and finding the double block in Heian Sandan a bit tricky? You aren’t alone! This transition is a common hurdle for many students in our Online Shotokan Karate program. In this quick guide, we break down the mechanics of the Kosa Uke (Cross Block/Double Block) to ensure your technique is sharp, functional, and powerful.

Understanding the Movement

The sequence begins from a solid inside block in a back stance (Kokutsu-Dachi). As you transition into the next move, you perform a simultaneous down block and inside block.

Key Tips for a Better Block

To move like a pro, keep these three points in mind:

  • Elbow to Elbow Connection: The secret to a compact and strong block is the alignment. Your elbows should practically touch as you chamber and execute the move.
  • Keep it Compact: A common mistake is making the block too wide. If your arms are flailing out, you aren’t protecting your center. Keep the movement “compact and in” to ensure you are actually blocking an incoming strike.

Why Practice This Online?

Mastering Shotokan Karate requires attention to detail. By reviewing these drills through our Online Shotokan Karate Academy, you can pause, rewind, and check your form in the mirror to ensure you aren’t making the “wide block” mistake.
